This is such a valuable literacy activity which promotes connections in the students mind. You could use this to then expand into a narrative, or even just build on vocab - with lessons on adjectives, metaphors etc, yet the students wouldn't even realise!

Thanks so much for your kind feedback Sam. I hope the students would enjoy it so much that it doesn't, as you indicate, seem like school work. It would indeed be a great way to build on vocabulary relevant to the setting of their choice and, if you compiled each student's work into a class book, I can just imagine the vocabulary the students would learn from each others' pages as well as by creating their own.
